What do chefs eat?

People are always scared to cook for a chef. That odd flicker of fear and doubt will shudder through them as they picture the chef ranting and raging over their poor and inadequate offerings.

Don't worry, it doesn't matter how bad you are in the kitchen, any chef will be delighted if someone else does the cooking! So relax, take a breath and by all means offer to cook for a chef and be secure in the knowledge that they'll be overwhelmed with the chance to sit back for a change and let someone else do the hard work. In fact, most chefs are pretty cool guests to have over, once they've eaten they'll offer profuse thanks and give a heart-felt compliment before jumping up to help with the washing.

A good chef will, day after day, test and taste everything that he produces in the kitchen. Rich, sweet, bitter, sour, salty, fatty, spicy...you name it the chef will have to taste it, continuously. So when the chance does arise for a chef to take a quick lunch or dinner break more often than not its the blander, simpler dishes that are consumed. It gives our overworked taste buds and twinging stomachs a chance to rest and recuperate.

Another odd quirk that most chefs tend to have is that they'll never consume their own food. There's just something about working with food all day long that'll put a chef off their own cooking. Even if two chefs produce the same dish one will have trouble stomaching his own but will have no trouble wolfing down his friend's. Odd, unexplainable but its a strange habit you'll see cropping up in kitchens the world over.
